Located along the vibrant coastal road of Gurney Drive in Penang, Malaysia, this Cafe Amazon branch reimagines a compact two-story commercial space into a calm and inviting coffee oasis amidst the density of the city. Surrounded by historic shop houses and contemporary developments, the project embraces its context not by competing with it—but by softening it. the design aims not only to optimize function but to curate a spatial rhythm that gently welcomes locals and visitors alike.
The core of the design lies in transforming a once solid and enclosed shop-house into a breathable space. Through the intentional creation of space and void, the design introduces vertical openings, skylight cuts, and a central void that brings natural light deep into the building. These spatial gaps are not ornamental—they serve as channels for light and greenery to flow in and animate the interiors. Carefully placed artificial trees—both large and small—are integrated throughout the space, giving each corner a living rhythm and softening the boundaries between built form and organic expression.
On the exterior, the façade draws inspiration from the surrounding colonial-era shop houses by interpreting classic architectural elements—such as cornices, recessed frames, and ornamental trims—into simplified modern lines. These details are translated into contemporary materials and refined proportions to strike a balance between contextual respect and brand identity. The result is a storefront that is grounded in its urban heritage while still standing with a quiet distinction.

Inside, the spatial narrative continues with an emphasis on light, movement, and openness. The central slow bar anchors the ground floor, seamlessly connecting seating zones and allowing circulation to flow intuitively. A vertical void connects both levels, allowing light to cascade from above and framing upward views. Earth-toned finishes, natural wood textures, and curated greenery soften the architecture and create a tranquil sensory atmosphere. Each moment within the space feels carefully considered, yet effortlessly calm.
Material selections are restrained yet refined. The exterior combines dark aluminum composite panels with white textured paint for contrast and depth. Interior walls feature white subway tiles and selective stainless steel accents for clean, durable finishes. Flooring throughout uses light-toned stone tiles, enhancing both brightness and tactile comfort. Every surface and volume supports the larger goal: to create a spatial experience that breathes—with light, with trees, and with time
